What an amazing episode to kickstart Marvel Studios’ newest series, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier! This Disney+ Original is a great extension into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to expand on characters, Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
We jump into an amazing aerial rescue/battle mission that Falcon is leading. This entire segment is exactly what the MCU is about: action, amazing graphics and CGI.
Episode 1 takes place only a couple months after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Spoiler alert for Endgame…. at the end an old Steve Rogers (Captain America) bequeaths his shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon), who does not feel he has the right to the shield. Later in the show, Sam holds a press conference at the Smithsonian and donates the shield to the museum. Keep your eyes peeled for another Avenger who has a cameo in this episode!
Like many others, Sam feels the weight of the world on his shoulders after coming back from the 5 year “blip”from Thanos’ finger snap. His nephews have grown, and his family’s business is underwater. Sam then goes with his sister to a bank to share a new business plan to expand their business, when he is asked how he makes money. Here Sam is a national hero, known as the Falcon and still cannot be extended a loan to save his family’s business, because he does not have an actual real job, and there is no fund for heroes. This scene made me think of our amazing nurses and teachers that are grossly underpaid and are the real heroes that often get overlooked. This episode talks about our world needing heroes and symbols of hope to be suited for the times we are in. We do not need to look any further than our nurses and teachers.
We jump into James “Bucky” Barnes (The Winter Soldier) having to go to therapy as part of being exonerated for his past grievances when he was under Hydra’s control. The whole “notebook thing” scenes in the therapy session added some dry humor to this episode. We see scenes of Bucky trying to turn over a new leaf. He tries to befriend an older guy who sets Bucky up on a date that doesn’t go too well. Bucky is troubled as he tries to make amends for the sins of his past.
Besides the great tie-in to the MCU, I really liked the story, action and the back stories of our two protagonists in this episode. I would have liked to see them share some screen time together as that would pose for some great humorous elements to the show. I hope to see more cameos from our other favorite Avengers in future episodes. There are no end credit scenes for this episode. All in all, I give this episode 4.5 Captain America shields out of 5.
