Disney resort refillable mugs are a fun souvenir to bring home from your vacation. I have often wondered if they were worth the $19.99 value. Of course getting a resort mug was one of the best perks of the Disney Dining Plan. This year since the dining plan was not available, I was not quite sure if spending nearly $100 for a family of five would be worth it. The mugs are super cute though and I do enjoy adding to my collection so I gave in.
There are so many fun mugs available to choose from. Whether you are a fan of the classic Mickey and Minnie characters or if you love Toy Story or even if you are a Star Wars fan, Disney has got you covered (for $29.99). They even have Disney Skyliner themed resort mugs (also $29.99)!
My favorite though are the resort mugs that are available during the holidays. I cherish my Mickey and Minnie Christmas resort mug more than all the others. Having a well themed mug throughout your trip makes the holidays in Disney even more fun. I had hot chocolate in my Christmas mug every night during my stay!
So let’s get back to the cost factor. For the first time ever I decided to document what myself and my family members drank on most days. Then I pulled up the menu to see what the cost would have been. Wow, was I completely taken by surprise!
Here is a rundown of the drinks that our family had every day. These drinks were consumed at least 2 to 3 times a day per family member on a 12 day vacation in Disney,
Coffee: $3.29
Fountain drinks: $3.99
Vitamin water: $4.49
Hot chocolate: $3.29
Once I did the math, I realized that had we spent the money to purchase these drinks we would have spent $480! I never realized how costly it was to purchase a resort drink in Disney.
Of course this trip was pretty long, but I did the math for a shorter trip as well. If you were to have at least one cup of coffee every morning before leaving your resort for a six day trip, you would break even.
So was it worth the $19.99 per family member? Absolutely! Now it has me realizing that this adds great value to the Disney Dining Plan. Who would have thought that amount of money would have been spent on drinks alone?!
Keep in mind the refillable mugs are accessible for use in all of the Disney resorts. Unfortunately you cannot use them in any of the Disney theme parks. Your resort mug has an expiration date so once your trip is over, so are the free refills.
If you spend any amount of time in your Disney resort and are likely to purchase at least one drink a day, I say go for the resort refillable mugs. You will likely save yourself a ton of money and also come home with a great Disney themed mug.
