The newest addition to Walt Disney Animation Studios, Raya and the Last Dragon is now streaming on Disney+ via Premier Access. Yes, we could have waited to watch the movie when we did not have to pay, but if we did that, then I would not be able to share my spoiler-free thoughts on the movie!
Just like most Walt Disney Animation Studios movies recently released, this movie shines in its stunning imagery and superb animation. Disney continues to evolve itself in the way they tell a stories. Raya and the Last Dragon lives up to the standard without a question. The storyline was great. The story shows how different lands were united and then, a moment in time broke the unity and separated neighboring communities. This division is shown in the movie in many ways, especially when the main character, Raya, tries to communicate with each of her neighbors. Each neighboring community has its own strengths and struggles, but little do they know that bonding together will overcome most of the struggles they are experiencing.
Raya and the Last Dragon does a great job of showing teamwork. It also shows how teamwork and trust go hand in hand. Without trust, you will not be able to conquer your goals. Even the unlikeliest of allies can come together, bond and work for a common goal, especially when they place their trust in each other’s hands. The movie also depicts forgiveness, and how healing it can be to truly forgive.
This movie has humor that will make you laugh out loud, and possibly shed a tear. But I will say that this is a great movie to watch together as a family. My kids are 11 and 9 and they loved it. Some of the scenes in which fighting takes place may be harder on the younger viewers, so as the PG rating suggests, parental supervision is advised for the youngest viewers, especially with the purple-colored clouds that turn people to stone and the fighting scenes.
In the broken world we live in now, this movie shows that people can come together and live harmoniously if they set aside their differences, forgive, and work together. We may not have a dragon to help, but it takes a leap of faith and one kind gesture and act of service to make a difference in a person’s day.
